WILDLIFE PARKRESORT, PIONEERING IN SUSTAINABILITY
With its historical roots, development and approach, the project’s prime mover Griendtsveen stands out as unique, innovative and groundbreaking; particularly in respect of its entrenchment in an historic, regional alliance. Today, as ever, the company’s enjoys entrepreneurial strength. Griendtsveen is focused on quality and respects nature and the environment. As a result, the company has chosen unconditionally for sustainability.
These qualities are reflected in the development of the WildLife ParkResort. In terms of sustainability, the concept is unique. Considerable attention is being paid to protecting new and existing flora and fauna and sustainability will play a major role in the application of materials and systems. During construction, use will be made of the most recent pioneering developments and innovative techniques.
Self-supporting in water and energy
The extensive peatlands, now excavated, have a complex soil hydrology. The problems with the water systems found there and the particular nature of future needs have been taken up as challenges. They have prompted close cooperation with the Water Supply Company Drenthe and the Velt and Vecht Water Board.
The partners are now developing an ecologically sustainable, integrated water installation occupying an area of approx. 50 hectares (more than 70 football fields) and serving an area exceeding 300 hectares. The system includes natural water purification and, moreover, has sufficient capacity to catch excess rainwater temporarily, thereby helping to prevent flooding.
The WildLife ParkResort aims to make maximum use of new techniques. Not only with regard to water, as mentioned above, but also as far as energy is concerned. Ways to reduce the waste streams are being investigated. Reuse is desired and the scope for the resort to have its own biogas power station will be studied.
In terms of water and energy, the WildLife ParkResort will be largely self-supporting. The aim is to use green energy and to be extremely economical in the use of energy in the park.
Aims concerning water are:
- A high degree of economical water use and reuse, including ecological waste water purification.
- A clear water system
- More natural water levels
- The storage of excess water
To foster innovative developments and pioneering techniques, cooperative relationships have been entered into with scientific research institutes and experts.
